    IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement)

IFTA simplifies fuel-tax reporting for interstate truckers by letting you file one quarterly return for all jurisdictions you operate in.

The International Fuel Tax Agreement is a cooperative arrangement between the 48 contiguous US states and 10 Canadian provinces that consolidates fuel-tax reporting. Instead of filing in every state your trucks cross, you file one quarterly IFTA return with your base jurisdiction.

You report miles driven and fuel purchased per jurisdiction. The base state redistributes payments. To stay compliant you need an IFTA license and decals on every qualified vehicle (a CMV with two axles and GVWR > 26,000 lbs, or three+ axles regardless of weight).

Most carriers automate this with an ELD or GPS feed plus a TMS — manual mileage-by-state spreadsheets are an audit risk.

Run compliance & dispatch in one place

Hayes combines a DOT-aware ATS, dispatch, EDI, and document compliance — built for carriers who don't want five logins.
