EDI 214 (Shipment Status Message)
EDI 214 is the X12 transaction set carriers use to send shipment status updates — pickup, in-transit, delivered — back to shippers.
EDI 214 is the standardized 'where's my load?' message in the X12 EDI standard. Carriers send it to shippers, brokers, and 3PLs at defined milestones: tender accepted (X1), arrived at shipper (X3), departed (AF), in transit (AG), arrived at consignee (X6), and delivered (D1).
Most enterprise shippers require 214s as a contract condition. Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and DOD load tenders all carry 214 SLAs — typically a status within 15 minutes of the milestone.
Modern TMS platforms auto-generate 214s from ELD geofence events, so the dispatcher never types one manually.
